MIGRAINE AND HEADACHE AWARENESS MONTH
June is recognized as Migraine and Headache Awareness Month, dedicated to raising public awareness and understanding of migraine disease and headache disorders. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), migraines and severe headaches affect more than 15% of American adults, with women experiencing these conditions at more than twice the rate of men. Migraine is recognized as one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. Symptoms often extend beyond head pain and may include severe throbbing, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and sensitivity to light and sound. Individuals experiencing recurring headaches that interfere with daily activities are encouraged to seek evaluation from a qualified healthcare professional.
FOOD SECURITY, NUTRITION EDUCATION, AND COMMUNITY IMPACT
In Georgia, more than 1.6 million people experience food insecurity, including hundreds of thousands of children. Organizations such as Feeding America, Feeding Georgia, and the Atlanta Community Food Bank serve as critical safety nets by helping provide millions of meals and resources to communities in need each year. Their work is essential and deeply appreciated.
At DFOWW Incorporated, we complement those efforts through our Write-Right Nutrition Program (WRNP), which combines supplemental food assistance, personal care items, essential supplies, nutrition literacy education, gardening education, wellness instruction, and practical life-skills training.
DFOWW Incorporated’s Write-Right Nutrition Program complements traditional food assistance efforts by pairing supplemental food support with nutrition literacy education designed to promote long-term wellness and self-sufficiency.
Education + Nutrition = Empowerment.
While emergency food assistance helps address immediate needs, our workshops are designed to help individuals and families build long-term wellness, food sustainability knowledge, healthier eating habits, budgeting skills, nutrition label comprehension, gardening education, and practical strategies for stretching limited grocery resources further.
WHAT MAKES THE WRITE-RIGHT NUTRITION PROGRAM DIFFERENT?
DFOWW Incorporated is not a traditional food bank or food pantry. We are an education-based food security program. Our focus extends beyond simply providing food. Through structured educational workshops, participants learn practical skills related to nutrition literacy, healthy eating, food sustainability, gardening, grocery budgeting, and long-term wellness.
Our goal is to help participants not only access food today but also gain knowledge and tools that may support healthier and more sustainable choices for the future. This educational approach is one of the many things that makes DFOWW Incorporated’s Write-Right Nutrition Program unique. We are not simply distributing food—we are working to empower individuals and families through education.
FREE TO PARTICIPANTS DOES NOT MEAN FREE TO PROVIDE
Many community gardening, nutrition, wellness, and educational programs are promoted as free to participants. While individuals may not pay a registration fee to attend, it is important to understand that these programs are not free to provide.
Every workshop, class, and community program requires resources. Facilities must be maintained. Utilities must be paid. Educational materials and supplies must be purchased. Insurance, transportation, equipment, marketing, administrative support, staffing support, and program coordination all carry real costs. Simply put, free to participants does not mean free to provide.
The true question is not whether a program costs money. The question is how those costs are funded. Some programs are supported through grants, taxpayer-funded institutions, charitable contributions, corporate sponsorships, university budgets, foundations, or other funding sources. Others rely upon participant investment fees to help offset a portion of program expenses. At DFOWW Incorporated, we believe it is important to be transparent about this reality while continuing to provide high-quality educational programming.
UPCOMING KIDS & PARENTS GARDENING + NUTRITION WORKSHOP
You do not need a backyard to grow food.
SNAP benefits not lasting through the month? Fresh fruits and vegetables continue to rise in price, making it difficult for many families to maintain healthy eating habits on a limited budget.
DFOWW Incorporated is hosting a hands-on Kids & Parents Gardening + Nutrition Workshop designed to help families learn practical ways to grow food at home, reduce grocery expenses, and build healthier eating habits.
Participants will learn:
• How to grow vegetables, fruits, herbs, and spices
• Container gardening techniques for apartments and small spaces
• Understanding plant life cycles
• Ways to stretch SNAP benefits further
• How growing food can help reduce grocery costs
• Healthy eating and nutrition habits for the entire family
Every registered family receives gardening materials to take home.
A free catered lunch will be provided. Registered workshop participants may also become eligible for future supplemental food distributions and additional Write-Right Nutrition Program support opportunities.

UNDERSTANDING JUNETEENTH AND INDEPENDENCE DAY
Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced freedom to the last enslaved African Americans in Texas. Although the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued more than two years earlier, many enslaved individuals did not receive news of their freedom until that date.
Juneteenth is recognized as the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States. Independence Day, observed on July 4, commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and the birth of the United States as an independent nation.
Many African Americans celebrate both Juneteenth and Independence Day. Juneteenth recognizes the end of slavery and honors the resilience and contributions of African Americans. Independence Day recognizes the founding of the nation and the ideals of liberty and self-government.
Together, these observances provide opportunities to reflect upon American history, progress, and the continuing pursuit of liberty, equality, and opportunity for all.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why is there a participation fee?
Nonprofit status does not eliminate operational costs. Participant investment fees help support curriculum development, educational materials, gardening supplies, facilities, insurance, administrative costs, participant resources, and catered meals associated with the Write-Right Nutrition Program.
What is the participation cost?
• $25 per qualifying low-income adult participant
• $40 per qualifying low-income family household
• $75 per non-low-income adult participant
• Children under age 17 participate free when attending with a registered parent or guardian
Low-income eligibility may require verification of participation in qualifying assistance programs such as SNAP, TANF, or other approved income-based assistance programs.
Why are food distributions connected to workshops?
DFOWW operates an education-based hunger relief program rather than a food-only assistance model.
Can I receive food without attending a workshop?
