DFOWW Incorporated – April 2026 Newsletter
Executive Director’s Message – National Minority Health Month
April is recognized as National Minority Health Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about health disparities and improving health outcomes in underserved communities. This observance reminds us that health is influenced not only by healthcare, but also by access to nutritious food, education, stable housing, and economic opportunity.
At DFOWW Incorporated, we see firsthand how rising food costs and the increasing cost of living are affecting working families, seniors, and households with children. Many families are working hard and doing their best to make ends meet, yet still struggle to afford enough healthy food. Food insecurity is not just about hunger — it is directly connected to chronic health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and obesity, which disproportionately affect minority and low-income communities.
For this reason, the Write-Right Nutrition Program focuses not only on providing supplemental food, but also on providing nutrition education. When families learn how to prepare balanced meals, read nutrition labels, reduce sodium and sugar intake, and cook affordable, nutritious foods at home, they are better equipped to protect their health long-term.
Food assistance addresses an immediate need, but nutrition education creates lasting change. When we combine food access with education, we are not just helping families for a day — we are helping families build healthier futures.
During National Minority Health Month, we reaffirm our commitment to improving health, reducing food insecurity, and empowering families with knowledge that can last a lifetime.
Sincerely,
Daphany Williams-DuBois
Executive Director
