Self-Sufficiency Programs and Services
August 2024 Schedule
Intersectionality Awareness Month is celebrated in August. The month highlights the interconnectedness of social categories like class, race, and gender, and the overlapping systems of discrimination or disadvantage they may face. It also promotes understanding and advocacy for diverse and intersecting identities. Experts estimate that up to 1.7 percent of the population are born with intersex traits – the equivalent of about 5.6 million US residents.
Intersex is not synonymous with Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgender and shouldn’t ever be mentioned in the same sentence with intersex. With that being said, there is one anomaly though. Some individuals who identify as Transgender, may have been born with an intersex biological variation and not know it, because they haven’t been medically tested for it and or because some intersex medical conditions don’t manifest until long after childhood. So, it’s highly plausible that some Transgender people also were born biologically intersex.

Additional Announcements
The Write-Right Entrepreneurship Program (WREP)
WREP provides guidance to entrepreneurs who are passionate about a cause on how to start a non-profit in Georgia, as well as the sustainability of the non-profit through pecuniary resources, grants, and funding. The program also provides mentorship and guidance to youth wanting to be entrepreneurs. Many people want to start their own businesses but lack the skills and resources to become an entrepreneur. However, entrepreneurship paves the way for generating wealth and higher earnings. The benefits of owning a business extend beyond the business that is established. Entrepreneurs improve the lives of individuals, communities, and the overall economy. Entrepreneurship promotes innovation and self-reliance, as well as generates employment opportunities.
Fundraising Event
It’s almost back to school time, so it’s time to decorate your office with plants and flowers. Greenery in a classroom and office can create a more relaxed atmosphere and contribute to a positive work environment. Indoor plants enhance the overall appearance of a space, but studies show they boost moods, increase creativity, and reduce stress. Our nonprofit charity organization is hosting a plant and flower fundraising event on Saturday August 17, 2024, from 12:30pm – 2:30pm, at the Oak Hill, Child, Family and Adolescent Center.
The proceeds will be used to help fund the Write-Right Nutrition Program (Hunger Relief Program). All purchases are a tax write-off. Plant selections include but not limited to the following, highly sought rare pink princess philodendron, calathea plant, alocasia Jacklyn, poinsettia, geogenanthus (rare), prayer plant, philodendrons, zamioculcas, snake plant, money tree, peace lily, lucky bamboo, anthurium, swiss cheese plant, monstera, and array of perennials. Plant prices depend on selection and size. Free catered lunch from Maggiano’s Little Italy restaurant will be served to anyone who makes a two (2) minimum plant purchase. This is a family event, so please feel free to bring the kids. Vegetarian meal options will be available. If you have any questions, please feel free to call our main office at (678)977-9703.

The Write-Right Nutrition Program (WRNP)
This program addresses food insecurity challenges disproportionately impacting low-income communities and families with children. Under this program, we host low-cost community workshops in which all participants receive nutrition literacy information and a complimentary,
healthy meal. Low-income families with children and/or primary caretakers of children under 17 who experience food insecurity, can apply to enroll in the WRNP program. Eligible applicants will receive free food contingent on available grant funding. For more information and to learn how to apply, please email us at info@dfoww.org.
While local food banks often provide exigent, necessary food to those in need, the Write-Right Nutrition Program (WRNP) provides nutritious meals to families with children along with nutrition literacy information workshops. This allows participants to obtain, process and understand nutrition information and skills needed to make appropriate nutrition related decisions. The Write-Right Nutrition program consists of 6 in-person workshops totaling 36 hours of curriculum for the whole family. A certificate of completion will be awarded to participants who complete all 6 workshops. The Write-Right Nutrition Program is our nonprofit organization’s core program, and it is free for all kids 17 years of age and under.

The Write-Right Literacy Program (WRLP)
The Write-Right Literacy Program is a series of in-person and virtual workshops aligned with the common core standards and are designed to address literacy achievement challenges unique to low-income communities and families with children. The WRLP was developed to assist low-income individuals over 18 without a high school diploma to take the Reasoning Through Language Arts portion of the state GED test. At-risk 16- and 17-year-old youth seeking enrollment will only be considered with verifiable parental consent. The WRLP is listed on the National Literacy Directory (NLD) website.
