Self-Sufficiency Programs and Services
November 2023 Schedule
The CDC observes November as National Diabetes Month. During this month, nationwide educational activities are planned to increase the public’s awareness of this disease.
Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. Insulin is a hormone that helps regulate blood sugar levels. When blood sugar levels are too high, it can lead to serious health problems, such as heart disease, stroke, and kidney disease.

Additional Announcements
The Write-Right Business Program (WRBP)
WRBP provides guidance to entrepreneurs who are passionate about a cause on how to start a non-profit in Georgia, as well as the sustainability of the non-profit through pecuniary resources, grants, and funding. The program also provides mentorship and guidance to youth wanting to be entrepreneurs. Many people want to start their own businesses but lack the skills and resources to become an entrepreneur. However, entrepreneurship paves the way for generating wealth and higher earnings. The benefits of owning a business extend beyond the business that is established. Entrepreneurs improve the lives of individuals, communities, and the overall economy. Entrepreneurship promotes innovation and self-reliance, as well as generates employment opportunities.
The Write-Right Literacy Program (WRLP)
The Write-Right Literacy Program is a series of in-person and virtual workshops aligned with the common core standards and are designed to address literacy achievement challenges unique to low-income communities and families with children. The WRLP was developed to assist low-income individuals over 18 without a high school diploma to take the Reasoning Through Language Arts portion of the state GED test. At-risk 16 and 17 year-old youth seeking enrollment will only be considered with verifiable parental consent. The WRLP is listed on the National Literacy Directory (NLD) website.
The Write-Right Nutrition Program (WRNP)
This program addresses food insecurity challenges disproportionately impacting low-income communities and families with children. Under this program, we host low-cost community workshops in which all participants receive nutrition literacy information and a complimentary, healthy meal. Low-income families with children and/or primary caretakers of children under 17 who experience food insecurity, can apply to enroll in the WRNP program. Eligible applicants will receive free food contingent on available grant funding. For more information and to learn how to apply, please email us at info@dfoww.org.
Have you been putting off starting your own small business or nonprofit organization because you don’t have the extra money to pay a lawyer or a professional to complete the legal paperwork? Everyone should have the opportunity to pursue their passion and dreams. Our nonprofit charity organization will be hosting our final entrepreneurship workshop for this fiscal year, on Saturday November 18, 2023, at the Villages at Carver Family YMCA. This entrepreneurship workshop will carefully guide participants through the step-by-step process of legally establishing/starting an LLC small business and 501(c)nonprofit organization in Georgia. There are many grants and funding sources through the SBA for new small business owners. In addition, if you want to set up your own 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, we will gladly assist you. As a 501(c)(3) federal tax-exempt nonprofit, you will be able to apply for grants, accept donations, and will be exempt from paying federal corporate income tax.
The deadline to register for this workshop is Friday November 3, 2023. There is limited seating available, so we strongly recommend you reserve your seat today by registering and paying the $75 donation registration fee. Youth (17 years and under) who are interested in starting their own business are welcome to participate with a parent or guardian for a reduced donation registration fee of $35. Seats will only be reserved for those who complete the online workshop registration form and pay the required donation registration fee. Submitted workshop registration forms in which the donation registration fee is not immediately paid via our secure PayPal business account will be declined.
Participants will receive a 30-minute break in which our staff will serve free catered lunch from Gusto restaurant to all attendees. Vegetarian meal options will be available.

It’s that time of year again when many people will be celebrating the holidays. Plants are a meaningful gift that continues to grow and provide beauty for many years to come. Unlike other gifts that eventually expire or are no longer in trend, live plants only get better with time.
Our nonprofit charity organization is hosting a plant and aromatherapy candle fundraising event on Saturday November 18, 2023, from 12noon – 2pm at the villages at Carver family YMCA.
100% of the proceeds will be used to help fund the Write-Right Nutrition Program (Hunger Relief Program). All purchases are a tax-write-off and you get to take your favorite indoor/outdoor plants, cucumber melon, and cinnamon scented aromatherapy candles. Free catered lunch from Gusto Restaurant will be served to anyone who makes a purchase. Vegetarian meal options will be available. Spread the word and we look forward to meeting you. If you have any questions, please feel free to call our main office at (678)977-9703.
