“Basic Rules of Grammar”
Last year DFOWW covered an 8 week series on “POS” (parts of speech). We learned that verbs are one of the eight parts of speech, and that there are different types of verbs. This presentation of: Basic Rules of Grammar, will address two verb types, that will help improve syntax as it relates to your writing.
1. Intransitive verbs are action verbs that always express doable activities. They are different from transitive verbs because there is no direct object following an intransitive verb.
Examples:
She grew up.
“she” is the subject and “grew up” is the intransitive verb.
It rained.
“it” is the subject, “rained” is the intransitive verb.
They jumped.
“They” is the subject, “jumped” is the intransitive verb.
More examples of intransitive verbs:
● arrive
● go
● sneeze
● run
● sing
2. Transitive verbs are action verbs, e.g. – kick, eat, clean, wants. Second, transitive verbs must have a direct object. Something or someone who receives the action of the verb.
Example:
● Lisa kicked the ball.
● Lisa = subject
● Kicked = transitive verb
● Ball = direct object
● Susan eats french fries, covered in ketchup.
● Susan = subject
● Eats = transitive verb
● French fries = direct object
* If you’re unsure on whether or not a verb is intransitive or transitive, you can always look up the word in the the dictionary, which will list the type of verb, the word is.
